“Emma represented the possibility to love and be loved. He wondered what it would be like to see her sweet smile everyday. The need to protect her from the men who hunted her overwhelmed him with a surprising intensity.”

Guest Post by Denise Grover Swank:

Follow Your Dreams

Six years ago my husband died from burn injuries he sustained in a single engine plane crash.  At the time, I had four children. (I later adopted two more.) After many months of mourning and trying to figure who I was now that I was alone.

Losing my husband made me reevaluate my life. You think you have all the time in the world to do everything you plan to do but my husband’s death was proof that wasn’t always the case. I began to look at life differently and decided to take risks. My new motto when facing a decision was “Will I regret it if I do this? Will I regret it if I don’t?”

I had always wanted to write a book since I started my first novel in the fourth grade. (A yet to be finished masterpiece.) I’d tried multiple times and failed to finish. Lack of time. Lack of talent. Lack of determination. So two years ago, I discovered NaNoWriMo. (National Novel
Writing Month) Writers are challenged to write a novel in the month of November, being declared a “winner” if they write 50,000 words in thirty day. I told myself I either wrote a novel for NaNoWriMo or I gave up this crazy idea for good.

I finished on November 30 with 69,000 words and raced on to finish the novel at 96,000 words on December 10, 2009.

I discovered some things about myself. One, I could do it. Sure, my novel had plot holes big enough to drive a semi-truck through, but I finished a book. Second, I discovered that I loved writing. I loved creating people and worlds to get lost in. I loved the power to create worlds for other people to get lost in. Writing is like sharing a ginormous daydream I can share with others and not only that, other people want to get lost in my daydreams.

Heady stuff indeed.

Five novels later I have two published books – Chosen and my humorous southern mystery, Twenty-Eight and a Half Wishes. In November, two more books will be released. Hunted, the second book in the Chosen series and my young adult science fiction/romance Torn. My path to publication hasn’t been easy, but honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing. It makes me appreciate it all that much more. But I’ve also learned that dreams don’t come easily. They take hard work
and determination. And perhaps, just a bit of stubbornness.
